Hong Kong has just set the world record for the highest case fatality rate due to Covid19 (1 out of 5 people with symptoms dies, 2 years into the pandemic!). The cause is low vaccination rates among the elderly and the use of Synovac, a vaccine less effective than others against Omicron. If the vaccination coverage of old people in China is a predictor, COVID-19 may soon start causing the death of many (many many!) old people in China. A dramatic reminder that the pandemic isn’t over yet.
In recent days, #HongKong has recorded the highest daily #COVID19 DEATH toll in the world. A crucial factor driving the surge is that the vast majority of Hong Kong’s vulnerable population remains #unvaccinated, despite the wide availability of #COVIDvaccines.
